A brief history of my Internet self; I am quite the Tumblr addict when I want to be. When it's active I can spend hours on there, re blogging, asking random questions and getting no replies - I didn't say I was well followed - and just ogling the random pictures that appear in my feed.
It was through Tumblr that I was introduced to Antoine Dodson, off the back of a rather sordid event, he became an Internet sensation.

Which, in itself, was made fun of - it has its comedy, yes.

But then came the good stuff, some Internet genius remixed the interview into 'The Bed Intruder Song'.
I genuinely really like this song! I'll warn you, it's pretty catchy; enjoy!

He's now on the rise and rise, he has his own YouTube channel, pretty much dedicated to him and his girlfriend, which already has over 56,000 subscribers.
I don't think he has the Chris Crocker 'fame' yet, but I'm here to spread the word of Antoine.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

I rented The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas at the beginning of the year, and found it so touching. The naivety of Bruno over the Jewish concentration camps made it relatable, just as I wouldn't expect a nine year old (then or now) to know all about the war, it made light of this fact, instead of creating a far fetched character. It follows his life as he leaves his comfortable Berlin lifestyle in the midst of the World War two, to be put in a position of boredom and curiosity surrounding the nearby concentration camp.

I'm not going to retrace the film for you, but you won't be disappointed. Both of the main child actors pull it off amazingly well, it's unlikely at their age they know the full 360 of the war, but their portrayal of the characters could make you wonder.

The climatic ending ends it perfectly. The heightened drama contrasted with the ins and outs of Bruno's daily life makes it even more affective.
The realistic dullness of life for a nine year old shines through, as does his passion for exploring and making new friends.

In comparison to the film, I was almost disappointed by the books ending. There wasn't half as much tension built, which meant it kind of just ended. There was also a follow up, after years had passed, I think it would have been better just being left. Leaving the reader to fill in the few blanks that were still there.
The book definitely conveys his naivety better, it has a childlike tone to the words, really bringing Bruno's childhood to life.

From reading the book after the film, it always slightly blurs the comparison, as I tend to picture the characters as those in the adaptation. While the actors were brilliant, I'm not sure the majority of them were the best representations of the characters, especially that of Gretel, Bruno's older sister.

I would highly recommend the film, and while it's not necessarily better than the book, the latter isn't a must read. Despite its content, it is an easy read with a real insight into a nine year old perspective, Boyne really got inside the child's mind, which is one of the positives I took away from my read.

It's a fact that is universally acknowledged, the film will never top the book - unless the book comes out after and is based on the film.
When I heard the controversy surrounding Twelve was going to be spun out into a film, I immediately found a copy and read cover to cover.

Twelve - Nick McDonnell

It's a quick easy read, but isn't lighthearted in any sense, it centres around 'White Mike' a drug dealer - who will be reincarnated by Chace Crawford in the film adaptation - dealing to the wealthy dwellers of the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The film is set to be Gossip Girl with a dark edge, which is evident through the characters breifly seen in the trailer.
The novel is told in third person, and follows numerous lives through the different parts, it's set over five days, so is spilt into five parts. The 'chapters' never last more than a few pages, which is what lends to the easy read nature.
The book itself stirred up masses of controversy, mainly because of the gratuitous drug use and violence featured.

It's in the same league as The Basketball Diaries, Thirteen & Kidulthood - whether the film will transcribe that is a different matter.
The trailer was released yesterday, which led me to post this as it isn't as big as it could be! No doubt there will be shameless promotion when there is Chace Crawford and 50 Cent in the lead roles, but up until now, apart from my own research I have heard little to nothing about it.

I personally can't wait to see it, even if I might have to track it down as I can't see it being a nationwide release.
Just my type of film!

High Heels & a Head Torch

When my dreamings of travel began, my mum found me a brilliant book which was presented to me on my birthday.
Originally i was little put off, because although i want to travel, backpacking around the world was never really the way i was going to do it. Never the less i dove in head first and began the read.

High Heels & a Head Torch, written by Chelsea Duke is a book for everyone. My initial put offs were immediatley forgotten, as this is a book perfect for anyone, going anywhere, not just gap years, or backpackers, it has great tips for anyone going on a trip.

You have several vital chapters, split up into various topics. There are some great tricks and tips in there, and you can really customize your reading experience because it's divided up so well, so you only need read what is relevant to you.
There's the obvious divide into chapters;

Ranging from how to keep clean while on the road, vital health information and the inevitable horror stories you will hear before you embark on your trip.
It's then further split into different topics, for example shared showers, different toilets and keeping your personal items personal.
Furthermore, she interjects with personal tales of her time backpacking;

these aren't only endearing, but they each have lessons to be learnt, which may help you when your out and about. She had to learn the hard way, but at least it gives you one less thing to worry about.

The chapter is then summarised with a list of Dos & Don'ts;

this is great to refer back to instead of having to find the specific part of the chapter. It's also good to just glance over if you don't know if you want to read the chapter, it'll give you an idea of the kinds of things that will be covered.

The entirety is then finished of with a suggested packing list.

This is pretty tailored to those who will be doing a year out backpacking, but the packing lists that she had received prior to her trip are mentioned throughout, which she states weren't of much use to a girly girl about to spend weeks in the outback.

I really enjoyed reading this book and it only made me want to travel even more. Having the personality of the author made it a really easy read, and put you at ease about any worries about the impending trip.
While parts of the book are specifically for backpackers, there really is useful advice for any holiday in there, it has packing tips, how to avoid insects, dealing with the locals - all things that i think could help someone going into unfamiliar territory. For the select few who will be embarking on a backpackers trip to die for, then this is a must. It has everything you would ever need to know, and may help you avoid some uncomfortable situations by learning from her lessons and those taught to her.
I particularly like how it's written for a woman, by a woman. The majority of travel books that I've seen are male orientated, or for those who will be constantly trailing around various museums that are 'must see', this comes from the point of view of a self confessed girly girl, who's out to have a good time. She gives advice on how to give you a boost when you've gotten homesick, how to feel that little bit sexy when you've been staring at the same clothes for an age, and how to have a good time on a very tight budget.

It's definitely worth a read, if not for the entertainment, then to take away a few tips for future holidays. I'll be keeping hold of mine to refer back to whenever i feel the need.
Think of it as a 'Goddess Guide' for all things travel.

Ke$ha - Animal

Another person you're probably loving or hating.
To me, there is the good music, but then her attitude that being drunk makes her permanently 'cool' is a bit of a fail... Anyway, i took the good side of things and bought her album.

I knew i was going to like it after hearing the samples on YouTube and itunes, and out of the 14 tracks, there are only two that i skip past. To me this is a winner of an album.

The whole album has the sound of a breakthrough twenty something year old, relishing in her new fame, similar to Lily Allen's first album - it boasts great beats but the lyrics are somewhat lacking, with most tracks based around 'booze' or boys, all with an attitude I'm growing to hate; it's simple lyrics which if you really listen to, are pretty awful, but none the less, are great to sing a long to.
But, pretty much every single track is something to dance to, which is what i love. They're feel good tunes at the best, and if you can overlook the lyrics, you're set to enjoy.

I Can Haz Cheezburger Convert.

If you don't know what it is, then you can spend hours on their website. But, basically it's just pictures, generally cats (LOLcats) with hilarious captions.
I never used to get it, why was this so funny to these people? We even did a mini project on it in English to show the use of English language or something.. I forget.
Anyway, a couple of days ago, i saw the following picture. And I 'lol'ed.

I have since trawled through countless pictures and I'm about to go add the book to my shopping cart.

I think you just need to find one 'amazing' picture, and from then on, all will be funny.

Maybe a pointless post to some - but any excuse to spread that picture to the world!

Kate Winslet.

I have indirectly been watching a few films with Kate Winslet in recently, I don't choose them because of her presence, she just happens to be popping up in a few. But, from this run of events, I have grown to love her as an actress (..and person for that matter).
I'm almost certain that everyone knows of her appearance in Titanic, and I'm almost shocked when people haven't seen it. It is one of my back of the mind favourites, but I never really liked her in it, I don't know if it was her, or her character or her portrayal of the character, either way, she didn't catch me then.

The turning point came in 'The Reader'. For those of you who don't know it, she plays a German woman who falls in love with a 17 year old school boy, it follows their story together and continues even when they are separated without choice. I really recommend this film for those who haven't seen it, I cried a lot, and it's pretty serious, not one that can be watched in the background, plus, it deserves your full attention anyway.

I've just finished watching Revolutionary Road, and it's another role which she really held my attention. This is the role in which she played the wife opposite Leonardo Dicaprio, it's quite an odd film just because so much seems to happen in it. But it's another recommendation. Despite me not liking her character in Titanic, I still think that her and Leonardo Dicaprio make an excellent on screen couple.

The Holiday also deserves a mention, which i never think of as a favourite film, but i always really enjoy it if i watch. This is the culmination of 4 character's lives (including Jack Black, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law) but I think she is kind of pushed to the back because of Cameron Diaz' brash character compared to Kate Winslet's more subdued atmosphere - she befriends an older man in a bid to get him healthy again and back on his feet for an awards ceremony (that isn't the highlight of the film by the way!) which is another thing that draws me in, because it all seems very believable from her portrayal.

I prefer her more vintage portrayals because I think she can handle that role so well, which doesn't match up to some other actresses.
Although saying that, she doesn't seem out of place in any of the roles she plays - which is another reason to love her!

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey definitely falls into the love him or hate him group. I have never met someone who thinks he's 'ok'.

I am with the former, i love him.

I grew up loving Ace Ventura & The Mask, and still love his newer films like Yes Man. In fact, that's one of my favourites.

I think he has been typecast into slapstick comedy - which, admittedly he does have a flare for - but he comes full circle as an actor showing other sides to his acting abilities.

Firstly was The Truman Show, while there might be elements of comedy in there, it is essentially a lot deeper than that. It's almost too hard to categorise into one genre because it's one of those films that just makes you think. Plus, he takes on the role so well - which i think is apparent of all his roles, but maybe I'm bias.

Secondly is The Number 23. Even without him in it, i think it's an excellent concept for a film. But, he completely strays away from everything you expect of him in this film and he pulls off an amazing portrayal of the main character. It's another film to get you thinking, not only about the story line, but just how versatile Jim Carrey can be!

Right now, i favourite him in Yes Man! I could (and have) watch that film over and over. Some of my favourite moments include, his Red Bull high, the sticky tape face, any presence of Norm and of course, the brilliant Zooey Deschanel. I love her too.

'Rage Against The X Factor'

After tweeting about this, I was surprised a lot of you didn't have a clue what i was on about. I felt it needed a mention.

So, for those among you who aren't lucky enough to know about it, there is a petition to get Rage Against the Machine's 'Killing In The Name' to Christmas number 1 this year.
I'm pretty sure in saying the whole thing started to stop Simon Cowell dominating the charts, for me, this is just a way to stop The X Factor automatically being number one, when if it was any other person who sang that song, to a good level, it wouldn't be noticed.

I admit that I have followed X Factor every year, and for the most part enjoyed it. But, none of the songs are Christmassy, and how they got the rights to Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah last year amazes me. That song was a classic, and the scary thing is, a lot of people probably don't even know it's a cover.
This year - wouldn't it be nice to have a little history? I hope to be a part of it... I've already downloaded Rage' from iTunes and plan to get a copy in the shops.
They aren't counting any download that is less than 49p a download into the charts - so beware of this!

Of course, Chris Moyles would be my favourite for the number 2 spot with 'Never Going To Snow At Christmas' but i think that is, unfortunately, less likely.
No offence to Joe McElderry of course - it's unfortunate this has come on his year. But if he really is that good, he'll manage a number one spot with this second single.

I seriously URGE you to buy the Rage Against The Machine single. Even if you don't like it... It's only 99p from iTunes, so it's not breaking the bank now is it?

Today, Wednesday December 16th Rage Against The Machine are number one on iTunes.
I'm hoping this will stick until Sunday's chart show. The first week in months i will actually be listening to the entire top 40.

You might have noticed i don't post on this blog very often, which is most likely how it will remain.

I would like to know what you think though, I love reviewing these sorts of things for you, but i feel each post becomes too wordy.
When it's only supposed to be a quick review, i never feel like anyone would bother to read the entirety of the post - I don't blame you, I would probably do the same!

I just want to know how you think I'm doing!

Would you prefer shorter reviews, but likely to have less info?

I'd really appreciate any advice or tips you have!

Songs For You, Truths For Me.

James Morrison's album. It's by no means new, but it's his newest...
I came across his first album, Undiscovered in 2006 and fell in love right then. It was played constantly until i had the ability to sing along to every song and butcher his works.
The 'latest' album was released at the end of last year, i listened then, broke it in for a couple of weeks and forgot about it.
He has been getting played to the max recently. I thought he deserved a mention on here, because he can now be confirmed as one of my favourite artists, even if he has been poorly overlooked for a year.

If you aren't familiar with James Morrison - he is one of those artists that never seems to get all that much publicity; maybe the odd interview for new releases, a short lived hype around his first and newest singles... He doesn't get what he deserves.

His vocals consist of raspy melodies, pitching between lows (too deep for me to attempt to recreate) and highs to give feeling to each track. There is almost a jazz feel to some of the songs, because of how uplifting they can be. It officially falls into the 'contemporary, soft rock' genre, which is present, but isn't what i would call it. There is something there for everyone, each track - even the more upbeat ones - is pretty mellow. It's perfect chill out music, but to me, definitely not just background noise.
I feel like each track on this album has personal feeling in it, there are tracks that at one point reduced me to tears because of how much i could relate to what was being said.

Just the title of the album shows the stereotypical nature of a lot of writers' receptions. People will sing a long, word for word, but never actually listen to the lyrics and think of what they might mean to the person that penned them.

The tracks consist of;

The Only Night - This is one which i think holds a 'jazz' feel. It has an amazing band behind it, which compliments Morrison's vocals which often give way to the band to let them shine.

Save Yourself - Another track which has an excellent band present, this is one of the upbeat tracks, but the beat classifies it into chill out music for me.

You Make It Real - This was his first release from the album, but it wouldn't be surprising if you didn't know it. You can feel his personality come across in this, and from performances I've seen, he seems to really feel the lyrics which he sings.

Please Don't Stop The Rain - This is one of the tracks that originally moved me. It was one of those days that nothing went right, then i heard this, and it just culminated the day. This isn't actually what the song is about, but it just summed up my day perfectly, and i think the relalatablilty that came from it is why i enjoyed it so much. This was released in March, but even i don't remember hearing it then.

Broken Strings - I am almost certain you'll have heard this. It was his track featuring Nelly Furtado, to me, it's lost all meaning because of how overplayed it got - if you ever watched TMF while it was out, you'll know what i mean - when i first heard it, i didn't like it, possibly because of Furtado's presence (can't say I'm a fan) but listening again recently, i really enjoy his parts on the track.

Nothing Ever Hurt Like You - This is my favourite track. Another upbeat one, which in parts gives me a gospel feel, perhaps because of the lyrics.
A particular favourite lyric "You don't get to taste the honey without the sting of the bee". Love.

Once When I Was Little - This is one of the least listened, but once again, is coming into its own with my recent replays. It's one of the slowest on the album and to me, doesn't need to be there.

Precious Love - This has a slight 50s feel to me, another favourite, but i don't know how to some it up...?

If You Don't Wanna Love Me - This is another moving track, one that i think, if you were on the verge of tears they would pour out. To me, this is a good thing, because i love having that emotion conveyed through music. It also shows off his singing ability a lot more than some of the other tracks.

Fix The World Up For You - Another one of his uplifting songs, it divides between upbeat and mellow once again, but if you listen to the lyrics you'll hear the upliftness! The lead up to each chorus are my favourite parts of this track.

Dream On Hayley - This is a little difficult to say anything on, because it has been unchecked on iTunes since i first bought it, i can't remember why, but it means I've only listened to it twice. I think it's because the lyrics, teamed with the tune behind it are verging on cheesy...

Love Is Hard - This is the track that never fails to move me. It has an amazing instrumental presence all the way through, that in no way overshadow the vocals. It's a ballad at its best and i love it more and more each time i listen.

Paranormal Activity

Let start by saying, that no matter what shape this post forms - i recommend everyone goes to see this. I still can't decide whether it is worth the hype, but it definitely qualifies as a good film.

I'm sure you've all heard about it at some outlet - this has been called "The scariest film of the decade", while i might not agree with this sweeping statement (surely it would be rated 18 if it really was the scariest) it's up there with the scariest I've seen.

The hype stems from the realistic nature of the film, however, just like The Blair Witch Project, this is complete fiction.
It's set in the home of Micah and Katie, a couple who have been experiencing more than just 'bumps in the night' and in an attempt to get to the bottom of it, they set up a video camera to capture any activity.
Because most horrors these days are just kill kill kill, with jumpy moments, but no real scares, it makes this stand out further with a real bone chilling factor. Fear in the pit of your stomach at some points and one that definitely remains in your head after seeing it.

The first half of the film is really just there to set the scene, get a feel for the characters and the set up. There's a few 'happenings', but i think it's night 13 - when she wears the blue tshirt - where it really began to scare me.
The entirety of the film is set in their house - all captured on a handheld camera. The normality of their life is something which adds to the thrills, as you begin to believe it could easily happen to you.

Admittedly, whenever it came to the night scenes, with the timer ticking over in the corner, both me and my friend watched through our scarves, hastily scrunching them up whenever there was a bang, but ripping them away in an effort to see what the gasps around the cinema were reacting to.

While watching it's terrifying, especially the last twenty minutes, when it reaches it's climax. I came out of the cinema thinking, yeah it was scary but so so. But, it's when you're getting into bed you realise what sort of affect it has on you.
Even with the films that have really terrified me and played on my mind (The Hills Have Eyes, the original Dark Waters) there has never been one that has stopped me sleeping.
Because this is all set in a bedroom, it comes to life when yours begins to look similar. I literally couldn't keep my eyes closed in case i missed something moving in my room. Seriously.

I feel a second viewing is needed to get closure, despite being able to sleep on the second night. But I'm not about to relive the first again...

This really is the fear of the unknown (**SLIGHT SPOILER**), there's a point where you see clawed footprints that have moved across the hall and into their room, and i just thought, if you show this claw footed animal - you'll ruin the whole effect. Which is probably why you never really see this thing.
I think it's the same in any film (or at least to me), when it's a monster, once you've seen it, the only scares come from the bits that make you jump because it's so unrealistic, Jeepers Creepers anyone?

It also has a great way of making you feel uncomfortable - there is no end credits, and inserts about the 'characters' involved, which lead you to believe that it is reality, obviously giving it an entirely more realistic feel.
Wikipedia has informed me that there is 3 endings to this, I'm not going to reel them off, but I've decided which one i would have preferred to see and which would have created a better ending. The ending i saw was a little ridiculous, apart from the 10 seconds before which created an almost cinema full of real screams.

This film has been around since 2007, when it was shown at ScreamFest in the US, it was consequently gradually released around America to limited audiences before being commissioned for a full release. It has been noted that people have had to walk out of the film because of how terrified they were. Stephen Spielberg has been rumoured to have walked out of the screening and later watched in daylight, but, to me this really is just a rumour. It's Stephen Spielberg...

Basically, while the film itself is up there with the scares, you'll only realise how good it is once it's finished. Once you're alone, in the dark.
This comes from someone who never appreciates the slightest creek or movement in the night anyway. I'm reading numerous reviews on this film, because i can see it going down in history, just like The Blair Witch Project, I've yet to read a bad review on it. I urge everyone who still has to see it, go! And be sure to let me know what you think!

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

The first proper post, why not start with something the majority seem to follow?

I got dragged to the first one with friends, not having a clue what it was about or where it had come from - at the time, I loved the film and eagerly awaited opening the series of books at Christmas, finishing them within a couple of months (a very fast read for me.).

Twilight was released on DVD and i realised, it's not that good of a film - not a patch on the book and the more i watch it, the less i like it.

So, onto New Moon - the second installment.
I think I'm right in saying that this was one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year, with gossip columns printing any bit of information they could find since the news broke that it had been confirmed.

I think we can all agree that it isn't exactly the best film in the world, but i really enjoyed it.
The special effects where the werewolves were concerned were excellent, but i can't really say the same for the Volturi scenes - especially all the whooshing about, it just didn't cut it for me. And with such a big budget you would have thought they could have put a little more into that, a little less into the contacts for the vampires. Same can be said for the cliff scenes, there was just something a little off about them.

In comparison to the book they did a pretty good job. Most of the dialogue was word perfect and I think I'm right in saying they didn't miss anything of importance out.
Still, for me, it doesn't really compare to the book. New Moon was one of my favourite of the 4, along with Eclipse.
I don't think Jacob's cheeky nature came across at all the same, which may prove a problem in the Eclipse film.

Bella's pain over Edward leaving was excellent, and really exceeded my expectations there. I really don't see everyone's problem with Kristen Stewart (the only thing i could think of was the fact she has Robert and Taylor to play with), I think she portrays Bella perfectly. In fact, she was one of the best actors in the first film in my opinion. The nightmare scenes felt really real and when Edward is breaking up with her, it just seems really realistic.

The rivalry between Jacob and Edward didn't seem to have as much intensity as the books, which again is going to be a downfall to the third installment.
As is Edward's fight face.. Just like in the clearing while playing baseball in Twilight, there is just something comical about it. See the meeting in the woods at the end...

The ending was an excellent way to finish - especially to those who haven't read the books. All very predictable as to what will be on the other side but still, excellent. I loved it, it wouldn't be too far to say it gave me butterflies.

So - while the world waits with baited breath for the July release of Eclipse, I myself will remain content with the excellent portrayal of the book. With only a few 'errors' this will definitely be hard to top.

Another Failed Spinoff

As you can plainly see, I have created a second blog.

This is coming off the back of my media studies fuelled brain.
It was my favourite subject and i'm consequently going on to study Media & Journalism at university next September.

This blog is going to consist of reviews i think.. My thoughts on films, music, tv shows - media.
I don't know how this will fair in Blogger's limited world.
But i initially decided to do this to give me something to tie my lack of study over to the next September.

Obviously i'd love to know your thoughts on everything and anything.
